Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge - US 93, Colorado River, Nevada

 

 

One of the most high-profile bridge projects in the United States suffered a setback in 2006 when the original cableway system failed and plunged into the gorge.

Somerset Engineering was brought in to design and erect a replacement highline (cableway) system for the failed predecessor. The extremely challenging nature of the Hoover Dam project not only demonstrates the full potential of a construction highline, but also the critical need for proper structural and mechanical engineering.

Somerset’s highline system featured twin luffing cableways (side by side) on 335-foot towers spanning 2,500-feet of open gorge. Each cableway boasted a 50-ton capacity and was instrumental in the completion of the entire project. Somerset also assisted by modifying the design of a 500-ton capacity S70 stiff-leg derrick in order to adapt a boom from a Manitowoc crane.

The Hoover Dam Bypass (also known as the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge) is scheduled for completion in fall 2010 with a grand opening in November 2010.
